The Story
In January 1963, a 21-year-old doctoral student named Stephen Hawking tripped on ice outside St John's College, Cambridge, and couldn't get back up without help. He laughed it off โ he'd been unsteady for months, dropping things, slurring occasionally. He hadn't mentioned it to anyone.
His mother finally booked him in for tests at St Bartholomew's Hospital in London. The doctors took two weeks. The result: motor neurone disease โ what most people call ALS โ and a prognosis of two years to live. He had not yet submitted a single chapter of his PhD.
For weeks, the work stopped. Hawking later described lying in his hospital bay listening to someone in the next bed die of leukaemia, and telling himself: at least his problem wasn't contagious. That sounds dark. It was also, in a specific way, useful โ it was the moment he stopped measuring his situation against a healthy life and started measuring it against something worse. The floor shifted. Everything above it became possible again.
When he returned to Cambridge, his supervisor Dennis Sciama watched something he didn't quite expect. The student who had arrived showing modest promise โ his Oxford tutor had written that Hawking was one of the brightest he had taught, and also that he did roughly an hour of work a day โ was suddenly moving. Not steadily, but with velocity. The urgency of a two-year countdown, it turned out, had demolished the luxury of coasting.
Hawking married Jane Wilde in July 1965 โ two years after the prognosis, two years past the doctors' estimate. The wedding photographs show him on two canes, grinning wide. He submitted his PhD thesis that same year, titled Properties of Expanding Universes. In the viva, the external examiner Fred Hoyle asked him to explain the error on page 80. Hawking told him there was no error on page 80. Hoyle backed down. The thesis passed.
The disease didn't stop. By the late 1960s the canes were gone and the wheelchair was in. By the mid-1970s his speech had slurred to the point where only Jane and a handful of close colleagues could parse it. He dictated work by mouthing words slowly, or by sitting through long sessions where ideas were read to him one line at a time until he blinked at the correct one. His student Bernard Carr described a session in which it took three hours to pin down a single equation. Hawking refused to hire a full-time nurse for years after he needed one โ partly because he couldn't afford it, partly because he found the arrangement too much like admitting something.
In August 1985, in Geneva for a conference, he caught pneumonia. His oxygen levels dropped fast enough that doctors at the hospital in Coire asked Jane whether to withdraw life support. She said no. A tracheotomy saved his life and cost him his voice entirely.
Back in Cambridge, a software engineer named David Mason adapted a program called Equalizer โ written by Walt Woltosz in California, originally to help Woltosz's mother-in-law communicate after a stroke โ so it could be operated by a single twitch of Hawking's cheek muscle. The resulting voice had an American accent. At some point Hawking was offered an upgrade to something more British, less robotic. He turned it down. He had become that voice. People recognised it in a half-second. He decided that counted as something.
Within two years of losing natural speech, Hawking had dictated the full draft of A Brief History of Time. Published in April 1988, it sold one million copies in its first year. It stayed on the British Sunday Times bestseller list for 237 consecutive weeks. The book's opening sentence: "A well-known scientist (some say it was Bertrand Russell) once gave a public lecture on astronomy." Hawking opened a book about the origin of the universe with a story about someone else. He was, until the end, more interested in ideas than in his own story.
He held Newton's old chair โ the Lucasian Professorship of Mathematics at Cambridge โ from 1979 to 2009. He traveled to every continent except Antarctica. His team had to engineer his access into venues that had never been built with a wheelchair in mind. He made it to Antarctica in 1997 โ they worked out the logistics beforehand. In 2007, at sixty-five, he flew zero-gravity parabolic arcs on a modified Boeing 727, floating out of his chair for twenty-five seconds at a time, eight loops in total. He told reporters afterward that his only regret was it hadn't been longer.
When people asked how he kept working through fifty-five years of the body disappearing around him, he said something that doesn't land as a quote until you sit with it: "My expectations were reduced to zero when I was 21. Everything since then has been a bonus."
He didn't mean it spiritually. He meant it arithmetically. He had been handed a number โ two years โ and had passed it, wrong, by one year, then five, then ten, then fifty-five. Each morning the number was still incorrect was a morning that could hold a new equation.
He died on 14 March 2018 โ Pi Day, and by coincidence Albert Einstein's birthday. He was 76. His ashes were interred at Westminster Abbey, near the graves of Isaac Newton and Charles Darwin. On the stone, they inscribed a single line: "Here lies what was mortal of Stephen Hawking." The rest, they left to the books.
What this proves
The prognosis was a guess, and he stopped treating it as a fact. The two-year number in 1963 was the doctors' best estimate โ not a sentence. What changed Hawking wasn't courage in the abstract but a specific cognitive move: he recalibrated what counted as a good day down to the level of "not worse than the person in the next bed." When the baseline drops that low, almost every day clears it. The student who coasted on an hour's work a day at Oxford became, after the diagnosis, someone with genuine research velocity โ because the number on the clock had changed, and he was no longer pretending otherwise.
Losing his voice sharpened his output. The tracheotomy in 1985 felt catastrophic; what it produced, slowly, was a forced economy of language. Hawking's questions in seminars became shorter and more precise after the voice synthesizer, because the physical cost of saying anything imprecise was too high. The same pressure shaped A Brief History of Time: he built cosmology out of plain English rather than equations, because he had to โ and that constraint made the book legible to ten million readers who would never have opened a physics journal. The constraint became the method.
At every step, he treated the setback as a specification, not a verdict. The fall on the ice in 1963 ended the coasting. The loss of mobility ended the conferences he could attend standing up and opened a period of greater theoretical output. The loss of speech ended casual conversation and produced a book that outlasted all of it. He didn't reframe difficulty in a motivational sense โ he literally asked: given what I still have, what can I now do? The thing you cannot change is not the ceiling. It is the floor.
